Course overview

In small teams especially, the way you lead day-to-day has a bigger impact than any policy or process.

This module helps managers move beyond simply “keeping things running” and develop the skills to lead, motivate, and grow people over time. You’ll explore the difference between managing and leading, how to sustain motivation without constant rewards, how to coach rather than fix, and how to build learning and development into everyday work — even with limited time or budget.

The focus is on realistic, human leadership. You’ll learn how to switch between manager and leader when needed, create an environment where people feel trusted and motivated, and develop capability within your team so you’re not the bottleneck for every decision.

What you’ll gain

By the end of this module, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand the difference between managing and leading — and when to use each
  • Create day-to-day motivation through clarity, trust, recognition, and purpose
  • Recognise what motivates different people and adapt your approach accordingly
  • Use simple coaching techniques to build confidence, capability, and ownership
  • Shift from “telling” to “asking” to support independent thinking and problem-solving
  • Spot development opportunities within everyday work, not just formal training
  • Support learning and growth even with limited time and budget
  • Build a team that feels engaged, capable, and ready for what’s next
